INTERVIEW QUESTIONS › TELL ME ABOUT A TIME YOU HAD A CONFLICT

How to answer “Tell me about a time you had a conflict.”

The trap in this question is not the conflict, it is whether you take any responsibility. Here is the shape of a strong answer, then rehearse yours out loud against an interviewer who will push on the weak part.

THE SHAPE OF A STRONG ANSWER

01

Set it up in one line

The situation and the tension, briefly. Do not spend your answer here.

02

Own your part

What YOU did to de-escalate. This is the whole question. Not what the other person did wrong.

03

Show the repair

The conversation you actually had, and what you changed about your own approach.

04

End on what you both agreed

A resolution, and what you carry into disagreements now.

What most people get wrong: they make the other person the villain and themselves the hero. Interviewers hear it instantly. The strongest answers admit a bit of their own fault.
